How to Clean a P08 Luger

The Luger P08 is an iconic pistol of the 20th century. The pistol is most noted for its sleek design, and its use by the German and Swiss military forces during the WWI and WWII. The Luger 1904 was later chambered in 9mm Luger, then renamed as the Luger P08. As with all weapons, particularly military surplus weapons, periodic maintenance is essential for the weapon to perform at an optimal level. Maintenance requires field-stripping the Luger P08.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to ensure that the weapon is unloaded. Push down on the magazine latch. Pull out the magazine if not already removed.

    • 2

Unscrew the grip screw counterclockwise. This is located on the bottom of the grip.

    • 3

Strike the frame rear at the safety latch with the butt of a screwdriver. Remove the safety latch.

    • 4

Push the barrel towards the rear and hold in place. This will cause the receiver to back up slightly. Turn the locking bolt downward. The locking bolt is located where the barrel meets the receiver, near the trigger guard.

    • 5

Push inward on the trigger/slide plate and remove. Slide the barrel and receiver forward and off of the weapon.

    • 6

Apply cleaning solvent/rust remover to a cleaning patch. Attach the patch to a bore plunger jag. Insert the bore plunger into the barrel and scrub vigorously until the barrel is clean. Change the patches out as needed. The barrel will be clean when no dirt or rust is evident on the patch.

    • 7

Apply cleaning solvent to a nylon bristle brush. Scrub all visibly dirty or corroded parts. Pay special attention to the bolt face and near the firing pin. Ensure that you scrub away all powder residue or rust.

    • 8

Apply cleaning solvent to a rag and rub all over the weapon. Scrub the weapon with the nylon bristle brush over any dirty or corroded areas until clean.

    • 9

Wipe all excess solvent away from the weapon. Reassemble the weapon.
