How to Disassemble a 45 Automatic

The commercial .45 caliber automatic pistol was designed by John Browning; it was produced by Colt Firearms as the M1905, and later as the M1911 Colt .45 Automatic Pistol. The .45 automatic is one of the most successful designs in the history of firearms. Since being replaced by the military in 1985, it has become a favorite among collectors. A .45 caliber automatic pistol can be safely disassembled in five minutes or less by the gun owner familiar with parts nomenclature and basic gun safety awareness.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cartridge magazine from the handle of the pistol by depressing the release button; it is located on the left side of the handle as viewed from the rear. Be sure to point the pistol in a safe direction at all times.

    • 2

Pull the receiver-slide back fully, and visually check to verify that there is no cartridge in the chamber. Slowly release the receiver-slide forward, and then back again for a second check. Make certain that the magazine has been removed before performing this check.

    • 3

Depress the recoil-spring plug which is located directly under the front of the barrel. Hold the plug down firmly with an index finger. Turn the barrel bushing at the tip of the barrel 1/4-turn in a clockwise direction with the free hand.

    • 4

Ease up on the recoil plug and spring until the spring is fully relaxed. Lift the plug and spring from the receiver.

    • 5

Turn the barrel bushing counterclockwise 1/2-turn, and lift it out from the front of the receiver.

    • 6

Pull the hammer of the pistol back until it is fully cocked.

    • 7

Slide the receiver until the rear of the slide-release lever -- located on the left side of the pistol frame -- is lined up with the small, circular notch on the receiver. There are two notches on the receiver. The forward notch is the largest, and the rear notch is the smallest.

    • 8

Depress the slide-stop pin located on the right side of the frame above the trigger. From the left side, pull the slide-stop lever up and out from the frame.

    • 9

Slide the receiver forward until it is free from the pistol frame. Remove the recoil-spring guide from the inside of the receiver.

    • 10

Pull the barrel out from the front of the receiver.
