How to Install a Shock Buff on a Glock 20

The Glock 20 is a full-size pistol chambered for the powerful 10mm cartridge. This cartridge exerts a great deal of energy when fired, much of which is absorbed by the pistol. The detrimental effects of this force can be greatly reduced by installing a shock buffer onto the pistol's spring recoil guide. When a Glock is fired, the slide assembly is pushed back by expanding gases and immediately thrust forward by the recoil spring (chambering the next cartridge). Over time the repetition of this action can cause wear on the pistol's moving parts, particularly between the slide and the grip assembly. The Shok Buff is a 1/10-inch thick plastic piece which acts as a shock absorber between the frame and the slide and should be replaced approximately every 1,000 rounds.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure that your Glock 20 is unloaded.

    • 2

Remove the slide from the frame (grip) and lift out the recoil spring assembly.

    • 3

Separate the recoil spring from the guide rod.

    • 4

Slip the small end of the guide rod through the hole in the center of the Shok Buff so that the round groove cut into the buffer is facing the long end of the guide. Slide it all the way on.

    • 5

Place the recoil spring back on the guide rod, and seat the end of the spring into the round groove of the buffer.

    • 6

Place the recoil spring assembly back into the slide with the flat end of the Shok Buff facing the frame. Reassemble your Glock 20.
