Among different styles of open sights, peep sights are the most common and generally considered the most accurate. Most modern military-type rifles, such is the AR-15, come standard with peep sights. The primary advantage of peep sights is that you are given a greater view of your target than you would with conventional open sights (which hide everything below your desired point of aim). Peep sights make it easy to acquire your target and accurately aim your rifle.

1
Aim your rifle at your target, while looking through the peephole of the rear sight.
-
2
Align your target with the top of the front sight. The top of the post should be on the spot that you wish the bullet to hit.

3
Center the top of the front sight within the circle created by the peephole. When the front sight is centered in the peephole and the front sight is on your target, then you have a proper sight picture and are ready to shoot.
