How to Remove Carbon From Shotgun Piston Rings

Semiautomatic shotguns operate using pistons. Carbon buildup on piston rings can cause your shotgun to jam. When cleaning your shotgun, keep in mind that the piston rings are made of rubber; clean them with a material that will not damage the rings. An industrial-strength solvent or rust inhibitor will effectively clean the carbon from your shotgun but may also weaken the integrity of the rubber piston rings. Use only products made specifically for gun cleaning.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to ensure your shotgun is unloaded, place the safety in the on position and field strip (disassemble for cleaning) your shotgun. Semiautomatic shotgun disassembly typically involves removing the cap from the front of the tubular magazine, which allows you to remove the barrel and fore grip, exposing the piston rings.

    • 2

Slide the piston rings from the front of the piston. A shallow groove in the surface of the piston holds the rings in place; you can easily remove them by hand.

    • 3

Wash the carbon from the rings using water and a gentle detergent.

    • 4

Clean the remainder of your shotgun with a rag soaked in gun cleaning solvent. Wipe off any carbon buildup, and apply gun oil to the surfaces of the shotgun.

    • 5

Slip the rings back into position, and reassemble your gun.
