Gun Safe Buyer's Guide

A gun safe is a must-have for gun owners who want to keep their firearms securely locked away. Before purchasing a gun safe, there are multiple aspects to take into consideration to ensure a smart, worth-while purchase.
  1. Gun Cabinets

    • A gun cabinet is like a gun safe in that it's a place to store guns. Cabinets, however, aren't nearly as secure as safes. Some cabinets simply allow easy access to the guns contained within, while others provide a place to display firearms through a glass window.

    Considerations

    • Manufacturers often include additional features that might not be necessary and can even lower security. For example, hidden hinges typically aren't as sturdy as exposed hinges and only provide aesthetic beauty, having nothing to do with a safe's security.

    Size

    • Safes made of thick steel are typically the most secure. Look for something with at least a 1/2-inch steel door and 1/4-inch steel siding. Generally speaking, the heavier the safe, the more secure it is. Proper security and fire protection are achieved through steel and high-density concrete amalgamate, two heavy substances.

    Tips

    • Gun safes are expensive, consider buying used to save money. Also, consider buying a safe larger than what you currently need if you plan on adding to your gun collection.
