DIY: Gun Rest

Small canvas and sand gun rests are available at most stores that sell shooting supplies, but with a few minutes work, it's easy to make one yourself. Two do-it-yourself sturdy small bag rests and two larger ones are available for the price of an old pair of canvas work trousers.

Things You'll Need

  • Several pounds of washed sand
  • One pair of straight legged canvas, or other heavy material, jeans
  • Sewing scissors
  • Heavy gauge needle and thread

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the sand by filling a gallon bucket up 1/3 the way. Fill with water and swirl the sand around. Wait a few minutes until the heavier particles have settled and then pour out the water and any debris on top. Repeat this two to three times until the sand no longer has any organic debris in it.

    • 2

Cut a tube approximately 10 to 14 inches from the calf of one trouser.

    • 3

Invert the tube. Fold ½ inch of an end into the bag, creating a double layer. Sew this end closed with a whipstich, leaving a ¼ inch hem.

    • 4

Stand the tube upright and fill it with the washed sand. Pack the sand down every few inches. Stop filling with 2 inches of material left in top of the bag.

    • 5

Create a second layer on this end by folding down the top part of the material into the bag. Leave enough material so that the end of the bag is completely closed when the material is drawn together. If necessary, adjust the sand in the bag to ensure a good closure. Whip stitch the material the same as with the other end.
