How to Accurize the Russian SKS

SKS rifles gained notoriety in the 1950s as the main battle rifle of the Soviet army. Surplus SKS rifles are now available to American shooters and are relatively inexpensive and reliable. The SKS rifle comes standard with a traditional wooden grip stock and opens sights, which can be adjusted for range. You can increase accuracy with your SKS rifle by replacing the stock with one equipped with a pistol grip --- pistol grip stocks are inherently more stable --- and by adding a securely mounted scope to the top of your weapon. Before modifying your rifle, make absolutely sure the weapon is unloaded.

Instructions

  1. Stock Replacement

    • 1

Release the rifle's trigger group by engaging the safety and pressing the small button behind the trigger.

    • 2

Pull the bolt and magazine rearward, causing the magazine to pivot forward and out of the stock.

    • 3

Remove the rifle's receiver and barrel assembly from the original stock and place it into the replacement stock.

    • 4

Position the trigger group into the new stock and lightly tap it on the bottom of the trigger guard, seating it into place.

    Scope Mounting

    • 5

Turn the receiver cover retaining pin --- located at the rear of the receiver --- to the up position and pull it out to the right. Slide off the receiver cover by pulling it rearward.

    • 6

Place the new receiver cover --- equipped with a rail mount --- onto the rifle and bring the retaining pin back to its original position.

    • 7

Securely attach the scope to the rail mount by using the scope's tactical scope rings.
