How to Conceal a Gun Safe

Even if you have a license and permit for your gun, you still need a safe place to store it in your home. Purchasing a secure gun safe is the first step, but you also need to think about where you'll install that safe. For an extra layer of protection, conceal your gun safe in a place that will make it more difficult for children and intruders to find.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a gun safe that will fit your needs--and more importantly, one that will fit your gun. There are many options when it comes to gun safes; some safes even offer special concealment features such as camouflage to help the safe blend into its surroundings or the ability to install the safe directly into a preexisting wall.

    • 2

Choose a location to install your gun safe. Find a location that is accessible enough to reach easily in case of emergency, but one that is also hidden from plain view. Installing the safe inside a closet, hidden behind clothes, is one option. Another is to install the safe behind a piece of furniture you can easily push to the side in case of emergency.

    • 3

Use a stud finder to locate a stud in the wall. Depending on the size and weight of your safe, you may need to locate multiple studs. Studs are located roughly 16 inches apart in most U.S. homes. Mark the location of the studs using a pen or pencil.

    • 4

Drill into the wall using a tool such as a Sawzall. The exact size will depend on the size of your safe, but it generally will have to be large enough for you to insert the safe into the wall cavity.

    • 5

Follow the directions that came with your gun safe for precise in-wall installation instructions. These steps will vary greatly depending on the size, brand and style of the safe you purchased.

    • 6

Smooth over the edges of the wall surrounding your safe after successful installation. This will add an extra layer of camouflage to the project, and make the safe look like a part of your wall instead of something you added later.

    • 7

Cover the front of the safe with a painting, a piece of furniture or some clothes to conceal it further.
