How to Clean Freckled Rust on a Firearm

Humidity in the air, sweat, soil and rain can cause freckled-looking rust spots on your firearms. If you maintain your guns on a regular basis, you can prevent the rust spots. Guns are useful in target practice, hunting and to protect your home from an intruder. Many people collect firearms, but rarely use them. It is vital that you inspect your gun at least once a year to ensure that it does not rust. This keeps your firearms in proper working condition and ensures that they will last for generations.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the old towel down on your tabletop to protect the gun from any scratches from the surface.

    • 2

Check the gun to make sure it is unloaded before attempting to clean it. Even if you never shoot the gun, this is one of the basic and most important rules of gun safety.

    • 3

Squirt a liberal amount of gun oil onto the extra-fine steel wool.

    • 4

Rub the freckled-looking rust spots very gently with the steel wool. Using a light touch will prevent scratching the surface of your firearm. Add extra oil to the steel wool if it seems dry.

    • 5

Place a few drops of gun oil onto the lint-free towel. Rub it across the area to check your progress.

    • 6

Oil the entire steel surface of the gun lightly with the oily rag once the rust is gone. This prevents further rusting, especially in pitted areas.

    • 7

Store your gun in a secured area with a lock on it, such as a gun safe or locked cabinet.
