How to Mount a Scope on a G3 Rifle

The G3 was the main battle rifle of the German army from 1959 to 1997. The rifle was chambered to use 7.62 mm NATO rounds. Based on a design developed by the Spanish firearms company CETME, the G3 was produced by the German firearms manufacturer Heckler and Koch. The rifle's upper receiver--the section that houses the action--features a slot on each side of the rifle that runs along its length. A scope can be mounted here by first installing a "claw" or low profile rail mount to these slots. A scope with rail scope rings can then be attached to the mount.

Instructions

  1. Claw Mount Installation

    • 1

Locate the clamp lever on the left side of the claw mount and place it in the down position.

    • 2

Put the right clamp into the top slot that runs along the length of the upper receiver. Line up the left clamp with the slot on the rifle's left side.

    • 3

Bring the clamp lever back into the up position. The clamp will slide into the slot.

    Low Profile Rail Mount Installation

    • 4

Use an Allen wrench to loosen the screws on the tops of the mount retention bases so that the bases can move laterally. Do not loosen the screws too much--the mount bases have springs behind them to aid in their movement and should not be removed.

    • 5

Place the mount on top of the rifle with the rail extension facing forward. The clamps on the bases will snap into position along the slots in the rifle's upper receiver.

    • 6

Secure the mount to the rifle by tightening the screws on the mount bases with the Allen wrench.

    Scope Mounting

    • 7

Loosen the retention screws at the base of the scope rings by hand. Place the scope on the rail mount so the retention screws fit within the slots that cut across the mount.

    • 8

Align the scope rings' mounting brackets with the sides of the rail mount.

    • 9

Tighten the retention screws by hand to secure the scope to the rail mount. You can twist the screws an extra quarter-turn beyond what you can tighten by hand using a flat head screwdriver, but do not to over-tighten the screws.
