How to Remove an AK-Style Muzzle Brake From a Bushmaster AR

Muzzle brakes have the advantage of redirecting gas from the end of an assault rifle's muzzle during firing. This can significantly reduce recoil, but the redirected gas can make for an extremely loud report. Many Bushmaster assault rifles come with AK-style muzzle brakes which can be removed with the right machines, tools, and technique. This results in a less ear-shattering shooting experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the pin points for the muzzle brake on the barrel of a Bushmaster assault rifle. Bushmaster muzzle breaks are installed with two pins securing the muzzle brake to the barrel. These pins are then welded in place and the welds are ground down to a smooth surface. Locate the two, small marks where the pins were originally installed.

    • 2

Secure a Bushmaster assault rifle in the vice of a milling machine.

    • 3

Insert a carbide-end mill into the milling machine's bit port and secure it in place.

    • 4

Mill out the two pins securing the muzzle brake to the barrel.

    • 5

Remove the Bushmaster assault rifle from the milling machine and place it in a gun vice. Secure the gun in the vice.

    • 6

Loosen the muzzle brake by tapping it with a rubber mallet and pulling it free of the barrel with pliers. Use delicate pressure; hitting the muzzle brake too hard can damage the barrel.

    • 7

Replace the muzzle brake with a replacement flash suppressor. A number of different muzzle-end attachments will ensure that the Bushmaster assault rifle conforms to laws and specifications set by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
