How to Mount a Scope for BUIS on an AR

Backup iron sights -- or BUIS -- are commonly installed on AR-15 rifles that are designed to use optical sights for primary sighting. Generally, these are the "flat-top" models that have replaced the traditional carry handles, which also housed the rifle's rear sight, with a rail-type mount that is primarily used for mounting scopes. Installing BUIS gives the shooter the option of using traditional sights should the scope malfunction or if the situation warrants it. BUIS are designed to attach to the rail mount of your AR-15. To use the BUIS, your tactical scope rings must be sufficiently high enough to provide you a line of sight between the rail mount and the bottom of your optic scope.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the BUIS to the very end -- closest to the shooter -- of the rail mount by loosening the sight's retention screw, placing the sight on the mount and retightening the screw.

    • 2

Mount your scope -- equipped with tactical scope rings -- to your rail mount in front of the BUIS by loosening the retention screws at the base of the rings, placing the rings on the mount and retightening the screws.

    • 3

Aim your rifle at a target using the BUIS; the sight is configured as a conventional peep sight. You should now have a clear sight picture when using either your scope or the iron sights.
