How to Replace a Mauser Rear Leaf Sight With a Scope Mount

Mauser rifles are designed for long-range shooting and make excellent hunting rifles. However, if you wish to exchange the 19th-century technology of the Mauser leaf sight with an optical scope more attuned to the 21st century, then you first need to place a scope mount on your rifle. Weaver-style scope mounts that replace the rear sight are available and will accommodate scopes equipped with Weaver-style scope rings--which are compatible with most modern scopes.

Things You'll Need

  • Small hammer
  • Pin punch
  • Weaver scope mount
  • Scope with Weaver scope rings

Instructions

    • 1

Make certain the weapon is unloaded.

    • 2

Locate the retention pin on the rifle's rear sight. Position the pin punch on the retention pin and lightly tap it out using your small hammer. Remove the rear sight when the pin has come out.

    • 3

Put the base at the bottom of the scope mount into the rear sights slot that just held the rear sight.

    • 4

Insert the scope mount retention screw through the pin hole--formerly occupied by the retention pin--and use the provided nuts to secure the screw. Your scope mount is now properly attached to your Mauser rifle.
