How Do I Use a Rifle Cartridge for a Round Count in a Revolver Ammo Belt?

Older style holsters---particularly cowboy style---are often designed to hold extra bullets by lining them up in individual loops that are sewn into the holster. Some of these holsters have the capacity to carry a large number of bullets, particularly if the bullets are a small caliber----such as a 22LR. You can use a rifle cartridge to quickly count the number of bullets on your holster or gun belt by counting the bullets and groups rather than individually. This procedure also works with ammunition belts.

Instructions

    • 1

Line up a rifle bullet---or an empty shell casing, which works equally well----perpendicular to the holstered bullets with the bottom edge of the rifle bullet aligned with the outside of the first bullet in the holster.

    • 2

Count the number of holstered bullets from the bottom of the rifle bullet to the top and record your number. The number of bullets will vary depending on the caliber and the kind of rifle bullet you are using.

    • 3

Place the rifle bullet on the first "group" of bullets, count it and then move the bullet over to the next group of bullets starting with the first one not previously counted. Stop when there are no longer enough bullets to fill the span of the rifle bullet. From that point, count the remaining bullets individually. For example, if your rifle bullet encompass 10 rounds and you count three "groups" and count 4 remaining bullets, then the total bullet count is 34.
