How to Clean a Kel Tec Gun

The Kel-tec line of small semi-automatic pistols are among the weapons of choice for those who carry concealed handguns. An American-owned company, Kel-tec is based out of Florida. The 9mm P-11 and P-9 share a common structure with the smaller P32 and the P-3AT, which allows easy cleaning. The P-3AT cleaning instructions also apply to their other small-caliber handguns. A thorough cleaning of a dirty Kel-tec takes about a hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Disassemble the P3-AT by pulling the assembly pin from the left side. Apply slight inward pressure to the barrel, and carefully pull the slide from the frame. Turn the slide over and take out the recoil spring and barrel.

    • 2

Clean all oil, grease and carbon from the parts using a firm child-size toothbrush dipped in gun cleaning liquid. Use the toothbrush to clean the interior of the frame, including into the magazine well. Do not use excessive amounts of cleaning liquid--use just enough to clean without leaving much moisture behind.

    • 3

Clean the small nooks and crannies with a toothpick or cotton swabs as necessary. Use the same technique as was used with the toothbrush in Step 2.

    • 4

Wipe the exterior of the magazine with a soft cloth dampened with cleaning solvent. If the magazine is very dirty, take the bottom plate off and wipe the spring and interior clean.

    • 5

Use a .380 bore snake to clean the inside of the barrel by wetting the cloth with gun cleaning solvent and running the snake through the barrel several times.

    • 6

      Dry all the pieces thoroughly.

    • 7

Wipe the inside and outside of the barrel, slide, recoil spring guide, springs and the magazine exterior very lightly with gun oil.

    • 8

Dab a small bit of gun grease on the slide rails and the assembly pin.

    • 9

Re-assemble the gun by reinserting the guide spring back onto the barrel, aligning the barrel in the slide, and pushing the slide backward onto the frame. Reinsert the assembly pin.
