Homemade Gun Bluing

A gun that has seen much use may have lost its bluing, or protective coating on the metal pieces. The blue is a thin coating of oxidized rust that prevents other, more major rust from setting into the gun. Cold bluing is available for do-it-yourselfers, and many gun hobbyists have given new life to old guns with a few evenings in the workroom.

Things You'll Need

  • Eye protectors and gloves
  • Commercial liquid gun blue kit
  • Dish detergent
  • Rust remover
  • Fine steel wool
  • Kitchen oven
  • Scotch Brite (000) pad
  • Silicone car wax (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Put on eye protectors and gloves.

    • 2

Take apart the firearm and set aside any parts that will not be blued.

    • 3

Clean the remaining parts using dish soap. Rinse thoroughly. Clean again using a firearm degreaser. Rinse thoroughly and let dry. Inspect the parts to ensure all possible oil, grease and carbon have been removed. If not, clean again until the parts are spotless.

    • 4

Apply a commercial rust remover to the parts. Wait several minutes. Dip a small section of fine steel wool into the rust remover liquid and softly rub the parts in the direction of any visible grain in the metal. Continue rubbing until all the previous bluing and any rust is gone. This may take a great deal of time depending on how much surface area there is to cover. A smoother polished part will take a darker hue when it is blued.

    • 5

Wash the parts several times with dish soap and water. Dry completely.

    • 6

Preheat the oven at the lowest temperature setting and put the parts in on the oven rack for just a few minutes to get rid of all moisture. They should be no hotter than unpleasant to hold in a bare hand.

    • 7

Coat the still warm pieces lightly and consistently with a portion of Scotch Brite (000) pad. When finished, let dry for one minute and then rinse the piece under cold water. Let dry. Continue coating and rinsing the piece until it achieves the dark blue surface desired.

    • 8

Repeat the steps with all the pieces.

    • 9

Dry overnight and optionally wipe the pieces down with a silicone-based car wax.
