How to Make a Fitted Gun Case

Many firearms owners enjoy the do-it-yourself aspect of working on guns. Making a simple fitted case for a firearm is not only practical but easy. Protecting a handgun or long gun from dust, dirt or the elements helps to preserve the gun's working order. This project will only take a few hours from beginning to end.

Things You'll Need

  • Thick paper
  • Yardstick
  • Pencil
  • Duck canvas
  • Shears
  • Sewing machine, or medium-duty thread and needle

Instructions

    • 1

Mark a vertical line 12 inches longer than the firearm down the middle of the paper using the yardstick and pencil.

    • 2

Place the firearm along the left side of the line, with the grip to the left and the slide or barrel to the right and parallel with the line.

    • 3

Sketch an outline loosely around the top, left, and bottom of the gun, with at least a 4-inch margin on a handgun and 6-inch margin with a rifle. Give the right side an extra-inch margin.

    • 4

Trim the newly drawn pattern. Lay it on the canvas, which will become the inside of the gun case.

    • 5

Draw around the pattern on the canvas for the left side of the case. Turn it over, match up the pattern and draw the right case side. Trim the canvas to the pattern.

    • 6

Place the canvas flat on the workspace with the outside down. Lay the firearm on the material as it was originally on the paper pattern. Fold over the right side and ensure all the borders match up. Adjust the firearm and material until all edges fit together well.

    • 7

Fold the edges of the canvas inward to create a double rounded edge all around the case with about a 1-inch margin on the edges.

    • 8

Press the canvas down to get a snug fit around the gun. Draw a faint line snugly around the gun outline.

    • 9

Remove the gun, and stitch a tight seam around the doubled edge where the pencil outline was. Stitch another tight seam a quarter inch in from the outside of the case. Trim off any excess material on the inside.

    • 10

Place the gun back into the template. Fold the canvas over to ensure the fit is still good.

    • 11

Starting at the top of the canvas, mark where the snaps will go, approximately every two inches between the outer and inner seams. Set the snaps per the tool instructions.
