How to Dry Deer Legs with Salt for a Gun Rack

Hunting deer is not only a treasured pastime of hunters throughout forest regions, but it is also has practical benefits. You can use almost all of the deer parts for various things, including gun storage. A popular use of the legs of the deer is to create a gun rack by bending the legs into a position that will hold the gun and mounting them on the wall. Before you can build your rack, however, you will need to dry the legs with salt to prevent decay.

Instructions

    • 1

Bend the legs into the form you want them to be in when they dry. You should use rubber bands and a piece of wood to keep the leg in your chosen shape.

    • 2

Cover the bottom of a container that is big enough to hold the leg with kosher salt. Use enough salt to make a thick bed for the leg to rest on.

    • 3

Put the leg into the container on top of the salt. Make sure that there is salt under every part of the leg.

    • 4

Cover the leg with salt until you can't see it anymore. Shake the container around to make sure the salt is settled. Add more salt if any of the leg became visible.

    • 5

Put the container in the freezer for three months or until the leg is completely hardened. Take the leg out of the container and remove the rubber bands and wood.
