Difference in Leupold Scopes

Different varieties of scopes are designed for sport shooting (hunting or target shooting) and tactical shooting (military and law enforcement). The one trait they all have in common is the quality associated with the Leupold name.
  1. Reticles

    • Leupold scopes are available with a variety of reticles, or cross hairs. While designs vary, the basic elements are 2 intersecting lines---running straight across and straight up through the sight picture---representing the horizontal and vertical axis. Where the lines intersect represents the bullet's projected point-of-impact. Leupold also offers military-style reticles which feature ranging marks on the reticles that can be used for estimating range.

    Objective Lens Size

    • Leupold scopes are available with different size objective lenses. The objective lens is at the far end of the scope and allows light into the main body of the scope. The amount of light brought into the scope affects the quality of the image. In general, the larger the objective lens the clearer the image, particularly at long range. Leupold has 11 different sizes ranging from 20 mm to 56 mm; the most common sizes are 40 mm and 50 mm.

    Power Settings

    • Leupold scopes come with either adjustable power or fixed power. The advantage of an adjustable power scope is the option of multiple settings it gives the shooter. Fixed power scopes are preset at one particular range magnification setting and are practical if engaging targets at a consistent range.
