How to Use a Reticle Riflescopes

The reticles, or cross hairs, of a rifle scope are the elements which let the shooter know the projected point of impact of the rifle's bullet. There are numerous variations of reticle design, but the basics remain the same: a horizontal line which represents windage (the horizontal axis), a vertical line representing elevation (the vertical axis) and the point where they intersect represents the bullet's point-of-impact. Military style reticles have ranging marks, also referred to as mil-dots, along their length. Mil-dots can be used to estimate range to target.

Instructions

  1. Sighting in Your Scope

    • 1

Adjust the reticles so that they intersect on the bullets projected point of impact. Point of impact can be determined either by using a boresighter or by firing a controlled shot at a target and estimating the corrections needed to place the bullet hole at the center of your target.

    • 2

Adjust the windage reticle by rotating the adjustment dial located on the right hand side of your scope clockwise to move the reticle left or counterclockwise to move it right.

    • 3

Adjust the elevation vertical reticle by rotating the adjustment located on the top of the scope clockwise to move it down or counterclockwise to move it up.

    Determine Range to Target

    • 4

Choose a target of a known height, in meters, at an unknown range. Align the windage reticle with the bottom of the target and count the mil-dots to the top (if the top of the target falls between mil-dots estimate the percentage, for instance half way would be 0.5).

    • 5

Divide the height of the target by the number of mil-dots and multiply the answer by 1,000. For example, if your target is 1 meter (3 feet) high and mil-dot count of is 4, then your equation would look like this: (1 ÷ 4) x 1,000 = 250. Your range to target is 250 meters.

    • 6

Determine any bullet drop corrections (if necessary) for your particular circumstance.

    Engaging a Target

    • 7

Center your reticles on your target where you would like the bullet to hit.

    • 8

Maintain the scope's position on your target as steady as you can.

    • 9

Slowly squeeze the trigger until the rifle fires. Do not abruptly pull the trigger, as the sudden movement can move your projected point of impact off your target.
