How to Mount Rifle Scope Rings

There are two predominant systems for installing scope rings on your rifle. The traditional method entails mounting bases directly to your rifle that are designed specifically for your scope rings and locking your scope rings into place on the mounting bases. The other popular method is the use of Weaver-style scope mounts. Weaver-style scope mounts are dovetailed and allow for quick attachment or removal of the scopes or accessories. Weaver mounts are prevalent among military-style weapons and many tactical scopes come with Weaver-style scope rings preinstalled.

  1. Traditional Mounting

    • 1

Clean the surface of your rifle̵7;s upper receiver and of the mounting bases.

    • 2

Remove the plug screws from the rifle. The screws are installed by the rifle manufacturer to fill the pre-drilled holes used for attaching a scope mount.

    • 3

Align the mount base(s) with the screw holes and screw them to the upper receiver.

    • 4

Line up the mount over the holes and screw them to the rifle.

    • 5

Place the base of the scope rings into the tops of the mounts, so that the rings are parallel with the barrel. Turn the rings 90 degrees so they lock into position.

    Weaver-Style Mounting

    • 6

Clean the surface of your rifle̵7;s upper receiver and of the weaver mounting bases.

    • 7

Remove the plug screws from the rifle. The screws are installed by the rifle manufacturer to fill the pre-drilled holes used for attaching a scope mount.

    • 8

Align the weaver mount base(s) with the screw holes and screw them to the upper receiver.

    • 9

Loosen the retention screws at the base of your weaver scope mounts, allowing you to widen the bracket on the base of the scope rings.

    • 10

Place the scope rings on the base with the retention screws aligned with the slots that are cut across the mount (the screws should be in the slot). Align the sides of the bracket over the sides of the base and tighten the retention screws.
