How to Make Paper Cartridges for Black Powder Guns

Many states now have black powder gun seasons for deer and other game animals. A conscientious hunter tries to ensure that his equipment is capable of bringing down an animal before he goes out into the field with it.

For black powder rifles this means trying many combinations of bullets, powder and primers, all of which can greatly change the accuracy of the firearm. Knowing how to quickly make rifle cartridges helps a hunter improve accuracy and ensure he can bring down game consistently and humanely.

Things You'll Need

  • Dowel rod sized slightly larger than bullet diameter
  • Cartridge or cigarette paper

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a three to four inch piece of paper snuggly around the wooden dowel.

    • 2

      Moisten and seal the paper.

    • 3

Slide the dowel down approximately one inch from the top of the paper and drop a round bullet into the space, allowing it to sit on the dowel.

    • 4

Twist the paper snuggly just above the bullet and tie tightly with the thread. Snip off any excess top paper.

    • 5

Turn the dowel so the bullet faces downward and slide it out of the paper tube.

    • 6

Fill the tube with a pre-measured amount of black powder.

    • 7

Twist the paper snugly, directly behind the powder. Bring up the excess paper and lay it flat against the tube.

    • 8

Tie the middle of the tube tightly with the thread, ensuring that there is no extra paper sticking out. Snip off any paper that is above the tie.
