How to Sight a Pellet Rifle

Using a pellet gun is a good way to practice your marksmanship skills inexpensively. The majority of pellet guns come equipped with open sights. The front sights of most pellet rifles are fixed, but the rear sights are adjustable. On the top of the rear sight are two screws with two arrows, marked L (left) and R (right), pointing to the sides of the rifle: this is your windage (horizontal) adjustment. When the rear sight is viewed from the side you can see the sight elevator (a movable piece with a series of steps): this is your elevation adjustment.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a target at approximately 30 feet. Take steady aim at your target and shoot at least three pellets. Check your target and mark the center of the shot group with a piece of tape.

    • 2

Adjust the rear sight to bring the center of the shot group to the center of your target. To adjust for windage use your screwdriver to loosen the rear screw on the sight and slightly move the sight in the desired direction: left to bring the point-of-impact left and right to move it right.

To adjust for elevation pull the rear sight up and move the sight elevator forward to lower your point of impact, or move it back to raise it. Repeat this process until you are consistently hitting the target.

    • 3

Set up a new target at approximately 75 feet and repeat the process in Step 1. Continue to make fine adjustments to your sight. Once you are satisfied with your pellet gun's performance, carefully tighten the screws on the rear sight, so as not to move the sight's position.
