Check the Weapon
When you first handle a .40-caliber, check the chamber to make sure the weapon is unloaded. This should be the first thing you do whenever you pick up a firearm.
Safe Shooting
Do not place your finger on the trigger until you're ready to fire. Always be aware of your surroundings and never shoot in a direction that may cause injury or property damage.
Maintenance and Ammunition
Weapons function best when they are clean, well-lubricated and using quality ammunition. Faulty or poor-quality ammunition can malfunction and cause injury.
Security
Keep your .40-caliber pistol properly secured and inaccessible to children or others whom you don't want handling your pistol. Always keep your weapon unloaded when stored.
Alcohol and Drugs
You should never use your .40-caliber pistol while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This includes prescription drugs that may impair your judgment.
