40 Caliber Gun Safety

Popular .40-caliber handguns provide the performance of a large caliber while also allowing for a high magazine capacity usually associated with smaller caliber pistols. The safety practices for handling a .40-caliber pistol should be applied to all weapons you handle, regardless of caliber or type.
  1. Check the Weapon

    • When you first handle a .40-caliber, check the chamber to make sure the weapon is unloaded. This should be the first thing you do whenever you pick up a firearm.

    Safe Shooting

    • Do not place your finger on the trigger until you're ready to fire. Always be aware of your surroundings and never shoot in a direction that may cause injury or property damage.

    Maintenance and Ammunition

    • Weapons function best when they are clean, well-lubricated and using quality ammunition. Faulty or poor-quality ammunition can malfunction and cause injury.

    Security

    • Keep your .40-caliber pistol properly secured and inaccessible to children or others whom you don't want handling your pistol. Always keep your weapon unloaded when stored.

    Alcohol and Drugs

    • You should never use your .40-caliber pistol while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. This includes prescription drugs that may impair your judgment.
