How to Take Apart Shotguns

A shotgun is a short-range firearm that is popular for hunting. A shotgun requires simple, regular cleaning, involving wiping it down to remove dirt. Sometimes, however, you will need to take your shotgun apart to perform a more-thorough cleaning routine. You may also have to disassemble it when adding aftermarket parts or replacing worn parts. Whatever your need, you can easily take the shotgun apart yourself in just a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the slide on your shotgun up and down several times to make sure the magazine chamber is empty. You need to remove any ammunition that is in the gun.

    • 2

Unscrew the nut on the end of the slide. You can use your hand to remove this nut.

    • 3

Slide the barrel along the gun, away from the trigger until it comes away completely.

    • 4

Put your fingers in the magazine loader and compress the clips you feel on either side of the opening. The loader is on the underside of the gun, between the trigger and the slide. Pull the slide out of the gun while keeping the clips compressed with your fingers.

    • 5

Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the end of the magazine, where it opens, and pry out the end cap. When you get the cap out, it will pop out with the magazine spring attached to it.

    • 6

Place the tip of a punch on one of the two pinholes right above the trigger. Just push the punch into the hole until the pin comes out the other side. Do this for both pins.

    • 7

Squeeze the trigger once and pull out the trigger group. The whole mechanism will come out when the trigger is pulled.
