Gun Lock Safety

Safely storing firearms is the duty of every responsible gun owner. Guns should be kept in a locked location, unloaded and separate from ammunition. As an additional safety, gun owners should consider placing gun locks on their firearms. The use of gun locks can potentially prevent tragedy.
  1. Trigger Locks

    • Trigger locks encase the weapon's trigger guard and immobilize the trigger. When the trigger cannot move the weapon cannot be intentionally fired. However, some weapons will fire if subjected to an impact (such as dropping the weapon), therefore you should always unload your gun before placing on the trigger lock.

    Trigger Lock Operation

    • Trigger locks are comprised of two primary pieces that connect with an interlocking shaft (encasing the trigger). Trigger locks are available as key or combination locks. To attach a trigger lock, open the lock, separating the two halves and reconnect them over the trigger.

    Cable Locks

    • The cable locks interfere with the basic operation of the gun. Their presence impedes the loading and firing of the gun. Unlike trigger locks, cable locks prevent the weapon's action from closing, or (if being used with a revolver) the cylinder from seating.

    Cable Lock Operation

    • Cable locks are similar to bicycle locks but on a smaller scale. Cable locks are typically placed through a weapon's action, thereby preventing the gun’s chamber from being closed. To install a cable lock, remove the pistol's magazine and lock the slide back. The cable is then placed through the breach and magazine well. When locked the gun is impossible to operate. A similar approach can be used with most rifles and shotguns. When placing a cable lock on a revolver, open the cylinder and place the cable through the gun's frame (preventing the cylinder from returning to its original position).

    Safe Gun Storage

    • Gun locks can prevent the unauthorized use of your guns, but they are not foolproof and should be viewed as an extra safety precaution. You should still keep your unloaded firearms stored locked in a secure location.
