Types of Pistol Holsters

Pistol holsters come in a variety of designs, styles and materials. You can narrow the choices when you're looking to buy a holster. Keep in mind that a holster is a case that will hold the pistol and allow it to be carried on a person, saddle or vehicle. You need to know the size of the gun and how it will be carried--in the open or concealed? You need to know the laws that apply. A holster can indicate concealed carry. What are the laws in your area that concern carrying a concealed weapon? Concealed carry is illegal in many areas, but some allow it with a permit. If you decide to use a holster, you have several options to consider.
  1. Shoulder Holsters

    • A shoulder holster is designed to carry the pistol just under the armpit. It consists of the holster and two or more straps that go around the chest and shoulder. A shoulder holster is a concealed holster. There are shoulder holsters that will accommodate any pistol and they can be found in types that are made of leather or fabric. This holster can hold any size pistol.

    Waistband Holsters

    • Waistband holsters come in two types--either inside the waistband or outside the waistband. The outside models are the most popular. This type of holster is widely used by police departments. The waistband holster uses the carrier's belt as the strap so it does not have any other straps attached to the holster. Depending on the clothing that is being worn, a pistol in a waistband holster can also be easily concealed. This holster is primarily used for small-to-medium pistols.

    Middle-of-the-Back Holsters

    • Like waistband holsters, the user's belt is what the middle-of-the-back holsters use as a strap. This type of holster can accommodate any size pistol. This is also considered a concealed holster so be aware of local and state statutes. The main drawback for this holster is that if the wearer falls on the pistol it can cause back injuries.

    Ankle Holsters

    • This type of holster is held to the ankle via an elastic strap. They are used for carrying a small back-up pistol. Again, this type of holster falls into the concealed weapon category.

    Thigh Holsters

    • Thigh holsters have become popular with military and police units. The reason is that they hold the pistol on the thigh and can be adjusted to sit right where the hand of the user naturally hangs. This makes for quick access to the weapon. Thigh holsters also allow for greater movement and comfort because they are out of the way and not rubbing against any body parts. Thigh holsters attach to a belt with a long strap and a shorter strap that goes around the thigh. This keeps the pistol from bouncing as the wearer moves. Thigh holsters can accommodate any size or type of pistol.
