How to Change the Barrel on a Mossberg 88

The Maverick series Mossberg 88 is a pump-action shotgun that has a maximum ammunition capacity of six shells when using 2.75-inch ammunition or five shells using 3-inch loads. You can interchange the barrels of the Mossberg 88 with those of the 500 series shotguns produced by Mossberg. Thanks to the design of the Maverick series Mossberg 88, changing out your barrel is a relatively easy task.

Instructions

    • 1

Push in the safety button located on the front of the trigger housing to the ̶0;On̶1; position. Make sure the shotgun does not contain any ammunition by checking the magazine tube, elevator and chamber. Press in the action-lock lever located behind the trigger housing and move the forearm assembly (pump handle) all the way back, opening the action.

    • 2

Move the forearm assembly forward easily to position the front of the bolt in the center of the ejection port. Remove the magazine tube cap (take down screw) by unscrewing it counterclockwise off the magazine tube. Pull the old barrel from the receiver, using a twisting as well as a back-and-forth movement.

    • 3

Check the inside of the new barrel for any obstructions or debris and remove as necessary. Ensure that the forearm assembly is in the correct position by making sure that the front of the bolt is centered in the ejection port of the gun. Slide in the new barrel into the receiver and tighten on the magazine tube cap on the magazine tube, using your fingers.

    • 4

Check inside the ejection port to make sure the barrel has fully mounted into its seat inside the receiver. The barrel must fit against the machined ̶0;cut̶1; inside the receiver for correct installation.
