How Do I Disassemble My Mini 14?

The Ruger mini-14 is a semi-automatic medium-range rifle chambered in .223 caliber. Mini-14 rifles are based on the design of the M1 Garand (the standard American army battle rifle used in World War II) and are simple, durable and reliable. The rifle is designed to be disassembled in practically any conditions requiring a minimum of tools. However, disassembling your mini-14 rifle on a covered table or workbench is recommended.
  1. Disassembly Preparation

    • Verify that the weapon is unloaded and place the rifle safety (located at the front of the trigger guard) in the "On" position by pulling it back to its rear position. Press the magazine release lever (located behind the magazine well) forward and remove the magazine. Cock the rifle by pulling back and releasing the slide handle (the rifle must be cocked and the safety on to disassemble the weapon). Turn the rifle over and insert a 1/4-inch steel rod (or equivalent) into the hole located at the rear of the trigger guard and press the rod forward until the trigger guard pops open.

    Rifle Disassembly

    • Pull the trigger group straight out of the stock. Turn the rifle over and lift the receiver assembly out of the stock. Pull the stock back; the stock will separate from the rest of the rifle. Carefully move the guide rod/recoil spring slightly forward to disengage them from the receiver and remove. Align the slide locking projection (located on the slide, adjacent to the slide handle) with the receiver disassembly notch at the rear of the receiver slot. Pull the slide locking projection through the receiver disassembly notch and twist the slide out of the receiver (for general cleaning, this stage of disassembly is sufficient).

    Bolt Removal

    • Remove the bolt lock cover plate (located on the left side of the receiver) by tapping down the notch on the side of the cover plate with a soft metal punch. Press the bolt lock plunger (located on top of the receiver above the bolt) and remove the bolt stop. Move the bolt forward and pivot it out of the receiver.
