How to Remove Fine Rust From a Gun

Rust on a handgun, shotgun or rifle is easily developed by simply forgetting to wipe away fingerprints. If left uncleaned, this fine, light rust will slowly make its way further into the metal, causing pits that require more costly repair. It is best to wipe your the gun down every time you put it away; however if you forgot and rust develops, you should try to remove it right away to prevent further damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the gun to remove any fingerprints, oil residue or debris. Some rust might come off on the clean rag.

    • 2

Pour a small amount of solvent onto a clean rag and wipe the area of the rust. Do not scrub. Rubbing hard could create scratches or other damage. If the solvent doesn't work, try a polishing agent. Rub with the grain of the metal. Once done with the polishing agent, clean the gun with some solvent to get rid of any residue.

    • 3

Add a small amount of gun oil to fine steel wool and rub the rust area in a slow soft touch. Go with the grain of the metal.

    • 4

Clean the gun after getting rid of the rust. Wipe it with a clean cloth. If you used a polishing liquid, strip it off with the solvent. Apply new oil to the gun.
