Children
Young children are one of the more susceptible age groups for firearm accidents. Young children in general do not know the dangers of firearms and many accidents are the result of young children playing with weapons, thinking they are toys. Gun locks prevent children from causing accidents with weapons.
Teens
Many teens can endanger themselves and those around them by handling a weapon without supervision. Gun locks help prevent teens from obtaining working weapons and can help curb teen violence and reduce the amount of accidental teen deaths related to firearms. As a parent, utilizing gun locks can help prevent your teens from taking working weapons to show friends.
Unauthorized Use Prevention
Gun locks can prevent unauthorized users from using your own weapon against you. Gun locks let you control who is able to use a weapon and prevents another person from using your weapon against you. Using gun locks for this purpose is very common for concealed carries in vehicles.
Types of Locks
There are several styles of gun locks that are designed to secure weapons of all makes and sizes. Cable locks are threaded through the chamber of a gun and prevent the gun from functioning by obstructing the action. Trigger locks are used to prevent access to the gun's trigger and consist of two pieces. The two pieces attach around the trigger and a lock is used to prevent access to the trigger. Gun cases can be used as an effective deterrent and make it very difficult for someone to remove the gun from your home or car. Gun cases can be fitted with padlocks or combination locks for security.
Problems
Gun locks are very effective for safety but have several problems that are associated with them. Many gun locks are easily broken with common household objects and too many parents rely on the gun lock to prevent their children from tampering with guns, rather than training them in gun safety. Gun locks also make the gun more difficult to access in case of an emergency.
