Magazine Options
The Mini-14 gives its users the option to select different round magazines, such as the 5-, 10-, 20- or 30-round. The gun is designed to fire the widely used Remington .223 cartridge.
Aperture
The Mini-14's rear aperture--or gun "sight" is adjustable. Apertures allow light to enter, then magnify and refocus it. By doing this, it provides the user with an enhanced "depth of field" view--providing cross-hairs that can be used for aiming more effectively while using the aperture.
Breech Bolt Locking
The gun also features the "breech bolt locking system"--the method that many rifles use to load and unload cartridges. Breech bolt locking systems are used on many manually loaded rifles. The user is required to open the rifle, load the shell and close the rifle. The cartridge locks into place through the breech system. The breech bolt lock is a gas system that has a fixed position with a moving gas cylinder that cleans itself.
Malfunction Reduction
According to the Mini-14 Ranch Rifle Instruction Manual, to avoid malfunctions, the user should have the right caliber and type of ammunition and should always load it according to industry specifications. The gun should only be operated with safety in mind.
Reputation
The lightweight Mini-14 has a good reputation, and it is as popular as the MI Garand among gun enthusiasts. It is also widely used among many security agencies because of its capabilities and reliable nature. Newer models produced contain a new hardwood stock, as well as buttpad--a piece of padding that is designed to reduce the impact on the shoulder from the recoil of the weapon.
