How to Disassemble a Browning Automatic Rifle

The Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) was developed by John Browning late in World War I. Although the war ended before the rifle saw widespread use, its design and applications were far ahead of its time. The BAR is gas-operated and air-cooled. The rifle's receiver was made from a single piece of machined steel and used 20-round detachable box magazines as a source of ammunition. The BAR fires with the bolt in the open position to reduce the possibility of malfunctions.

    • 3

Remove the trigger-guard retaining pin located just above the magazine release on the left side of the weapon.

    • 4

Remove the trigger guard assembly by pulling it in a downward motion.

Use the combination tool to move the bolt guide, located just above the operating handle, outward and slide out the bolt group from beneath the weapon where the trigger guard assembly was.

    • 6

Pull the operating handle back, cocking the rifle, and return it to the forward position.

    • 7

Remove the gas-cylinder retaining pin located just behind the fore grip on the weapon̵7;s left-hand side.

    • 8

Pull the gas cylinder and fore grip forward, separating it from the weapon.

    • 9

Locate the guide assembly̵2;a long piece of metal encased in a spring. Depress the assembly and turn 1/2-inch counterclockwise to release the assembly. Push the assembly forward until it is possible to lift out and remove the assembly by pulling it backward.
