How to Make Your Gun Cabinet Secure

Install a Hasp and Padlock

  Purchase a sturdy steel hasp and keyed padlock. For added protection, consider installing multiple padlocks on the gun cabinet's door.

  Unfold the hasp and hold it in place. Mark the screw holes with the pencil. Now close it and pencil in the outline of the latch. Put the hasp aside, leave the latch in place and mark its screw holes with the pencil.

  Drill pilot holes with the screwdriver and screws. Carefully center the screws in the middle of each pencil mark.

  Open the hasp and hold it in place. Insert a screw into a pre-drilled hole and tighten it. Repeat this step with all the screws required for securing the hasp. Do the same for the latch.

  Close the hasp over the latch, insert the padlock and close it. Keep the key in a different location to deter children and unauthorized others from unlocking the gun cabinet.

Install Cable Locks and Anchor

  Purchase a cable lock for each gun plus one extra. Avoid combination locks and instead opt for keyed, four-pin tumbler locks.

  Unload the guns and install the cable locks according to the manufacturer's specifications. Designate a safe place---away from the gun cabinet---for storing the keys.

  Purchase a stronghold anchor and screws. Opt for a model that is designed for indoor use.

  Install the stronghold anchor inside the gun cabinet. If the cabinet is hung on a wall, drill deep through the wood into the wall stud. If the cabinet stands on a concrete floor, drill into the concrete below.

  Connect a spare cable lock to the stronghold anchor. Open it and thread it through the cable gun locks that are now securing the guns. Close the lock and secure the guns to the anchor.
