Collecting memorabilia from the Civil War is a passion for many history buffs. Collecting rifles from the period of 1861 to 1865 is particularly popular. Many of the Civil War rifles did not use the ammunition like we have today. They used something called a minie ball. This looks similar to the bullets of today, except that they had to be loaded with gunpowder individually. This took up valuable time, since the soldiers could only shoot approximately three times a minute. This led to quick development of carbines, repeating rifles and revolving rifles that used cartridges for ammunition, according to the Florida Re-Enactors website. There are ways to learn about Civil War rifles, so you know the gun you are purchasing is authentic.

  Explore at estate sales to find rifles from this era. Many times friends and relatives of the deceased person will not share the passion for the Civil War memorabilia and will sell off an entire collection or piece by piece.

  Check out online auctions such as eBay or craigslist.com. Often dealers who sell Civil War memorabilia will be a good source of information on where to find the rifles and other artillery.

  Purchase the gun only if the seller has the proper paperwork. . Ask to see titles of ownership and proof of authenticity.
