How to Ship Firearms to Another State

It can be difficult to legally ship firearms from one state to another. Federal laws do not allow gun owners to simply mail a shotgun, rifle or handgun from the post office. State laws also control the shipment of firearms and state for shipping firearms often vary from state to state.

      Find federal firearms licensed dealers in the state you are shipping from and the state you are shipping to. Most sporting goods stores are federal firearms licensed dealers.

      Talk to both of the firearms dealers and ask how much they charge. The dealer shipping your firearms will charge shipping costs and a handling fee. The dealer receiving your firearms might only charge a small handling fee.

      Check the state laws governing the shipment of firearms. Review laws in both states.
