How to Clean a Gun Packed in Oil

Before you test the range and accuracy of your new gun, the first thing you must do is clean the packing oil off of it. Whether it's a rifle or a pistol, once you've cleaned it with a few simple items, you'll be on your way to target practice in no time.

Instructions

    • 1

Dismantle the gun, separating the stock group from the barrel group and the receiver group.

    • 2

Pour a little cleaning solvent (such as Varsol) on either a lint-free rag or on one of the patches in your gun-cleaning kit.

    • 3

Wipe down the gun's exterior completely. The stock area does not need any cleaning since it has already had a finish put on it.

    • 4

Use a Q-tip with a bit of solvent on the end to clean the chamber. You'll need something that small to get in all of the grooves.

    • 5

Clean the barrel of your gun with your gun-cleaning kit. Assemble the rod that comes in the kit, attach a solvent-soaked patch on the end and then stick it in the barrel. Move it in an up-and-down motion, then pull it out. Take the patch off the end, then stick the rod back in the barrel for further wipe-down.

    • 6

Wipe the exterior of the gun down with some light lubricating oil (such as Rem-Oil or Ballistol) to prevent rust.
