How to Buy a Luger

If you're thinking of collecting guns and want to start with a Luger, it can be overwhelming. Since there are a lot of re-creations being passed off as authentic, you should have some basic knowledge of what to look for before giving anyone money. The Luger has some interesting qualities that you should know when you are buying one. Read on to learn how to buy a Luger.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the serial number of the Luger. This should give you the date the gun was created. Consult with an expert on the value of the gun with the particular serial number you copied. They can tell by the number what year it was made and sometimes whether it is a fake.

    • 2

Look for an insignia on the handle. The Death Head SS will bring more money if it is on the handle than an older WWI Luger with no history would bring.

    • 3

Find out whether the Luger is a military one or a commercial Luger. The value will vary accordingly. Commercial Luger's were made continuously from 1900 to 1945. Military Luger's were marked differently from the commercial.

    • 4

Examine the Luger to see if it is a contract Luger. These Lugers were made by contract for foreign countries. They will have symbols and wording from that country.

    • 5

Hunt for matching numbers on all parts of the Luger. If the gun has matching numbers everywhere it is likely that all the gun is original. The matching numbers were done for military guns.

    • 6

Evaluate the finish. The better quality of the parts and finish the more money that can be asked for the gun.
