Decide what you will be using the shotgun for--bird or small game hunting, big game hunting, target shooting or home defense.
Choose a barrel size. The most common are 12, 16 and 20 gauge. The larger the bore, the bigger the bang.
Compare different models at the store. Shotguns have different cocking mechanisms, sights, finishes, prices and hold different amounts of cartridges. Only by comparing the different makes and models in person can you make a final decision on what shotgun to choose.
Ask your dealer about reliability, cost, action and history. Usually, a gun dealer can answer questions you never thought to ask. It is important to talk to another person before you buy a shotgun.
