Collect Materials to Clean Your Gun Collection
Purchase the proper cleaning equipment for your gun collection. Cleaning rods and bronze bristle brushes fit for each particular gun's 'bore' (the inside cylinder of the gun) are essential in maintaining a clean collection.
Buy equipment based on gun size, and keep extra toothbrushes, gun oil and bore solvent handy.
Get gun lubricant for the guns in your collection. After a gun is cleaned, it should be properly lubricated with gun oil to stay free of salt and other damaging debris.
Clean Your Gun Collection
Start by checking the cylinder of an unloaded gun for impediments and malfunctions. Use a cleaning rod or bristle brush.
Disassemble any guns with removable parts before cleaning them. Clean each part separately by checking for debris and proper function. Metal components should be oiled thoroughly and small parts cleaned with a toothbrush or cloth.
Begin cleaning the bore of the gun by soaking a bronze bristle brush in bore solvent. Pass the brush through the bore several times. Attach a cloth soaked in solvent to the brush if necessary.
Use dry pieces of cloth down the bore to further clean the gun. Check the cloth for small traces of rust that may be present in the gun's cylinder.
Oil the gun's cylinder by using a cloth moistened with gun oil. A paper towel is usually considered sufficient for the task of regularly oiling your gun collection. A cloth made of wool is also ideal for oiling a gun collection.
Reassemble the gun and wipe it down. Return the gun to its original storage area with the rest of your collection.
