How to Get an Actor's Autograph Authenticated

Autographs and other memoribilia can be easy to fake, and knowing how to properly authenticate them can prevent enthusiasts from making potentially disastrous purchases. Luckily, with the right information, there are many simple ways that an actor's autograph can be verified as genuine. Whenever possible, get as much information about the signature as you can, as well as physical access to the signature.

Access to photos of other copies of the actor's signature
Magnifying glass

  Determine the time, date and place of the autograph's writing. Attempt to match this with times and dates in the actor's life; it may be that it could have been impossible for the actor to have made the autograph based on that information.

  Compare the autograph to samples or other copies of the actor's signature. If there are any notable differences, it may not be authentic.

  Use a magnifying glass to inspect the autograph. Look for indentations along the lines of the autograph where the pen or marker would have been pressed against the paper. If there is no slight indentation, the autograph may be printed.

  Determine the nature of the autograph. If it is on a document or letter, other secondary sources, such as those specified elsewhere in the body of the paper ̵2; which may include friends, business associates, attorneys, lawyers or businesses ̵2; may be able to offer statements concerning the autograph's authenticity.
