How to Calibrate the Chimes on a Ridgeway Grandfather Clock

The movement on a Ridgeway grandfather clock performs more functions than just keeping time. The hour strike and chime are also run by the movement. Adjustment of the clock is made with the pendulum, and three weights supply power to the hour strike, time and chime melody. The strike and chime noises are made through hammers striking various rods of differing lengths. The chime melody is created through differing sequences of strike. Sometimes the clock won̵7;t chime at the right time. You can calibrate the clock to fix this.

Instructions

Monitor the chiming for chiming more than a minute before or after the right time. When the chiming starts, stop the pendulum and write down the time. Remove the small nut that holds the minute hand in place by turning the nut counterclockwise.

    • 2

Take the hand off the shaft by pulling it straight off. With the pliers, grip the bushing that̵7;s on the back of the hand. Hold the bushing tight with the pliers and move the hand on the bushing the distance required to have the chime sound at the right time.

    • 3

Reattach the hand and tighten the nut-finger. Point the hand at the position you noted in the first step, plus any corrections. Then tighten the nut and start the pendulum. Reset the time with the minute hand only by moving it counterclockwise until the correct time shows. The chimes will be calibrated.
