How to Make a Zip Tie Looser

A zip tie is a plastic fastener that looks similar to a belt. The strip of plastic has notches jutting outward and a loop-like catch that holds the zip tie closed. To use, insert the tapered end into the catch and pull it until it reaches the size you desire. You know it's working when it makes a zipping noise and locks into place. No amount of pulling should cause it to loosen. However, with the right tool, loosening a zip tie can be accomplished in seconds.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper clip
  • Small screwdriver (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

      Straighten the paper clip completely.

    • 2

Push the paper clip into the square catch. There is a raised area inside that latches between the notches on the zip tie. Be sure to insert the paper clip into the catch from the same direction you plan to pull the zip tie loop in order to loosen it.

    • 3

Press the raised area down to unlock the zip tie. Pull the loop wider while pressing the paper clip into the catch. Loosen to the desired size.

    • 4

Remove the paper clip from the catch. The zip tie can now lock into position.
