How to Repair Compound Bows

Compound bows offer archers superior power packed into a smaller size than regular bows, due to the unique leverage that their pulley systems employ. The drawback to this innovative system, however, is that compound bows are more complicated, more apt to become broken and harder to repair. If your compound bow string does break, you can repair it yourself as long as it has teardrop string attachments. If it doesn't, you will need a bow press to remove the string from your compound bow, which usually means you will need to bring it to a shop to have it repaired.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the limb bolts counterclockwise two or three times to loosen them.

    • 2

Hold the bow in the center with one hand and step on the string with one foot.

    • 3

Pull the bow upward with your hand, flexing the string.

    • 4

Place the new string on the teardrop hooks on both sides of the bow. The bow should have two sets on each side, one that holds the old string and one that holds the new string.

    • 5

Release the tension on the bow by lowering it with your hand. Test the new string to ensure it is well-fitted into the teardrop grooves.

    • 6

Step on the new string and lift the bow again, flexing it a second time.

    • 7

Remove the old string from the teardrop hooks. The old string should become loose and limp as you flex the bow, making it easy to remove.
