How to Take Off a Pocket Watch Cover

Opening a pocket watch can be a challenge if you do not know how to open the watch or have the correct tools. If you use the wrong tools, you can permanently damage the interior workings of the watch. Before attempting to open the watch, it is important to find out if you have a hunter-style case, which opens by watch case opener only; a swing case, which opens by screw and watch case opener or a screw case, which opens by screw only.

Things You'll Need

Watch case opener
Thin rubber disc

Instructions

Hunter Case

  Push down on the crown to open the face of the watch.

  Flip the watch over, revealing a small groove behind the watch back.

  Insert the watch opener into the groove and twist gently to pop off the cover.

  Insert the watch opener into the second groove and twist slightly to pop the dust cover off the back of the watch.
Screw Case

  Locate the bezel on the base or top of the watch.

  Twist the bezel counterclockwise to loosen the two sides of the watch and open the back.

  Use a rubber disc to help open the watch if it has trouble opening. Apply even pressure so that you do not make your fingers slip, which can damage the watch.
Swing Case

  Unscrew the bezel on the case using even pressure and a counterclockwise movement. This opens the back of the watch.

  Slip the watch case opener into the small groove on the dust cover.
- 10
  Twist the case opener gently to pop the dust cover off the back of the watch.
