How to Care for RZ20 Parachutes

Leonardo da Vinci is credited with drawing a diagram of a parachute in the late 15th century, but it wasn't until 1920 that the modern parachute was patented. RZ20 parachutes were used in WWII and today they are collectible items with some value. Maintenance and proper storage is important to preserving this bit of history for future generations to enjoy and learn from. Fortunately, it isn't expensive or overly time consuming to do so and the effort will be well worth it.

Bring your parachute to a master rigger. This is a person that is certified by the FAA who can clean, repair and repack the parachute professionally for you. A good master rigger will have all of the equipment necessary to perform these duties. Request to see their certification if you are unsure.

Store your parachute in a clean canvas bag purchased for this purpose. If you are lucky enough to have the original canvas bag that it came with, use that. Get the bag professionally cleaned without chemicals.

Line the plastic bin with a piece of carpet or padding material. Store the parachute in the bin with a tightly sealed lid to keep out mice and insects that could damage it. Use desiccant packets in the bin to absorb moisture. Keep the bin in a cool dry place out of the sun. Ensure that the storage area is free from extreme temperature changes and threat of moisture, such as a basement that floods or laundry rooms.

Take it out once or twice a year to air it out, keep it fresh and inspect it for mildew damage. Replace desiccant packets with fresh ones.
