How to Clean Shiny Brite

Shiny-Brite ornaments are a staple of the holiday season in America. Founded by Max Eckhardt just after the Great Depression, Shiny-Brite specialized in glass bulb ornaments which were lacquered and hand decorated. The interior lining of these ornaments was silvered, helping the glass retain its "shiny bright" appearance over time. As most Shiny-Brite ornaments are now approaching very old age, they must be stored and cleaned with great care.

Instructions

  1. Cleaning Shiny-Brite Ornaments

    • 1

Hold the nozzle of an air blower bulb approximately four inches from your Shiny-Brite ornament. Fire several short bursts of air at the ornament to clean away any surface dust or other debris.

    • 2

Clean away stains, dirt and other residue from the colorful glaze on the outside of the ornament using a dry microfiber cloth. Use a gentle circular motion to restore the glaze's original polish.

    • 3

Repeat the above steps until each Shiny-Brite ornament in your collection is clean.

    Storing Shiny-Brite Ornaments

    • 4

Fill an envelope with two tablespoons of coffee grounds or dry white rice. Seal it and place it in the bottom of your ornament storage box to prevent moisture from damaging your collection.

    • 5

Wrap each ornament in a single paper towel. Follow the paper towel with two to three sheets of newspaper.

    • 6

Line the bottom and sides of the storage box with bubble wrap.

    • 7

Arrange the wrapped ornaments so that they fit snugly together. Close the box, seal the top with masking tape and return it to storage.
