What Are the Measurements of a Ninjato Vs. a Katana?

The katana as well as the ninjato are Japanese swords. However, only the katana is a historically accurate weapon whereas the ninjato is a creation of Hollywood. Katana were traditionally worn by Japanese Samurai and ninjato by Ninja --- on the silver screen only.
  1. The Katana

    • Japanese katanas were the main weapon of the warrior class for 500 years.

The katana was the most important weapon for a samurai --- the Japanese warrior class from the 15th to 19th century. Enemies could be fatally wounded with the sharp blades. However, the katana was not only a weapon, it was also a symbol of power and status. No one but a samurai was allowed to wear this weapon.

    Katana Measurements

    • Japanese swords are classified by the length of their blades. A typical katana needs to have a blade that is at least 60.6 cm long but no longer than 89.9 cm. The sword's blade is only sharpened on one side. The guard of a Katana is either circular or squared. The sword's hilt is always long enough to allow enough space for both hands. With a slightly curved blade it was a very elegant looking, yet deadly weapon. The katana was put into a sheath and carried at the Samurai's belt.

    Ninjato

    • The ninjato is a 20th century creation.

There is no historical evidence of the ninjato. This weapon became famous when it was used by movie ninja. Through the ninja movies, the sword gained popularity and different schools came up with thoughts on how to fight best with this kind of sword. In the movies, the ninjato is usually carried on the back with the handle close to the shoulders. This leads to the ability to quickly draw the sword in a fight. Ninja also had to be able to climb over walls without having a sword in the way.

    Ninjato measurements

    • As the ninjato is not a historical weapon, there are no standard measurements. Usually the ninjato's blade is shorter than the blade of a katana which means less than 60 cm. Unlike the katana, the ninjato has a straight blade and the guard is always squared. Some ninjato have a proper sword tip, others just have a blade than ends abruptly. Like the katana, the ninjato is a two handed weapon.
