Switchblade Types

Switchblades, or automatic knives, are knives that have blades that spring out from the handle. This spring is activated by a release mechanism found on the handle, such as a button or lever. There are several varieties of switchblades, which differ based on release mechanism and action type.
  1. Side-Opening Switchblade

    • A side-opening switchblade is essentially a regular folding knife that has a release mechanism. When released, the blade automatically pivots from its position within the handle to its position at the top of the handle by swinging out from one side. Thus, it is imperative to not place your hand on the side from which the blade comes out when holding a side-opening switchblade.

    OTF Switchblade

    • An OTF -- "out the front" -- switchblade has a blade that follows a path different from a side-opening switchblade or regular folding knife. The blade of an OTF switchblade springs out of the top of the handle.

    Release Mechanisms

    • The most common release mechanism is a button. However, switchblades are available with a variety of release mechanisms. The other options include lever lock, reverse lever, bolster release, toggle, press button, squeeze knife, clamshell and modern spoon.

    Action Type

    • The action type of a switchblade refers to its ability to automatically retract its blade. A single-action switchblade is only able to automatically release its blade. The blade must then be manually retracted to its position within the handle. A double-action switchblade is able to automatically retract its blade when the release mechanism, such as a button or lever, is pushed.
